Lago dei due Uomini

natural-water , WATER
A small, natural basin fed by rainwater, this lake sits at an altitude of 1,092m, surrounded by a forest of beech and alder trees. It is the largest of a group of lakes near Fagnano Castello and is considered a Site of Community Importance. The location is known among biologists for the unexpected 1982 discovery of *Ichthyosaura alpestris inexpectata*, a distinct subspecies of the alpine newt previously thought to be typical only of central Europe. Other amphibians, including the spectacled salamander and the Italian crested newt, also inhabit the ecosystem. The possibility of swimming is not indicated; visitors should check local signage. From the town of Fagnano Castello, follow the ‘strada dei laghi’ – the road of the lakes – which leads into the mountains. The lake is the second major body of water you will encounter. An alternative route is to take the Strada Statale delle Terme, exiting for Fagnano Castello and following signs for the lakes. Parking is generally available near a small picnic area by the shore. A waymarked loop trail connects Lago dei Due Uomini with the nearby Lago Trifoglietti and Lago della Paglia. This easy walk is approximately 4.8km long and takes around 1 hour 30 mins with 140m of ascent. Sources: Calabriaportal; I Luoghi del Cuore - FAI; Komoot.
