Sant'Agata de'Goti

SLEEP
Houses and palaces cling to the edge of a sheer tufa cliff, their tiled domes and bell towers forming a tight cluster above the Martorano river gorge. The historic centre is a tightly-packed warren of stone houses, narrow alleys and medieval buildings perched dramatically above the ravine. Key sights include the Duomo, founded in 970 and later restored, the 13th-century church of San Francesco and the formidable Castello Ducale which overlooks the town. One of the most impressive views is from the high Vittorio Emanuele Bridge, which reveals the system of arches supporting the village from below. The area is known for its Falanghina and Aglianico wines, as well as the local ‘Mela Annurca’ apple. Best Season: In June, when the streets are carpeted with intricate flower petal mosaics for the annual 'Infiorata' festival. The town is best reached by car. From Naples, it is about a 40km drive north-east, and from Caserta, it is about 15km. The most direct route is via the SS265 road. The nearest major train stations are in Caserta and Benevento, from which you would need to continue by bus or taxi. Parking is available outside the historic centre.
