Dolmen Gurgulante

historic-archaeological_site , LAND
A low, weathered table of limestone rests on five monolithic supports in a quiet olive grove. The capstone, measuring roughly 2m by 1.5m, is heavily corroded and covered with lichen, sitting only 90cm above the ground. This compact structure has survived since the Bronze Age, its small size perhaps helping it to remain camouflaged among the surrounding scrub and trees for millennia. Its function is thought to have been ceremonial, a tangible marker of an ancient community, rather than purely a tomb. From Melendugno, take the provincial road (SP297) towards Calimera. After about 500m, immediately after passing the Masseria Capitano, turn right onto a country track. The dolmen is located in the olive grove approximately 200m down this track. The site is marked with a tourist sign. Parking is informal along the side of the country road. Sources: Catalogo generale dei Beni Culturali; Arte e Luoghi; Fisa-Uan.it
