Bagni Della Regina Giovanna

Bagni Della Regina Giovanna
A secluded, circular pool of calm, turquoise water sits enclosed by limestone cliffs, connected to the open sea by a natural rock arch. This basin is the centrepiece of a site that also holds the remains of a Roman villa from the first century BC, which belonged to the nobleman Pollio Felice. Its popular name comes from a later legend associated with Giovanna II, the 15th-century Queen of Naples, who is said to have used the sheltered pool for bathing with her lovers. Visitors can explore the ruins on the headland and descend to the rocky ledges surrounding the water. Swimming is possible in the placid pool, though the seabed is pebbly; it is not advised in the open sea beyond the arch, where currents can be strong. From the centre of Sorrento, the site is a walk of around 40 minutes (approximately 3km). Alternatively, take the SITA bus 5070 towards Massa Lubrense and alight at the Caposorrento stop, from where it is a 10-minute, 750m walk. Follow the small, paved road, Via Punta Capo, following signs for ‘Ruderi Romani’. The path descends between olive groves and high walls before opening out to the ruins and the steps leading down to the water. There is no dedicated car park, and vehicle access is very limited. Note: Access is free. The area has no facilities, and the ground is rocky and uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Sources: Sorrento Review; Italia.it; Enchanting Sorrento.
