Clear, cool water from underground springs flows through a lush park, forming the heart of the area’s appeal. This is the source of the Rio Grassano, whose transparent waters reveal a bed of colourful algae and aquatic plants. The surrounding Parco del Grassano is a managed oasis with walking paths that follow the river's course, and canoe rental is available to explore the stream. Bathing is not permitted, but the main activity is observing the unusual clarity of the water. A short distance away, the 10th-century Benedictine Abbey of San Salvatore holds the region's deeper history. The abbey church, which has been rebuilt over the centuries, today houses an antiquarium displaying Roman artefacts recovered from the nearby archaeological site of ancient Telesia. Remains of the Roman city, including sections of its walls, and the ruins of a medieval castle known as the Rocca, can be seen in the surrounding landscape.
From the A1 motorway (Autostrada del Sole), take the Caserta Sud exit and follow signs for the SS7 (Via Appia) towards Benevento. Continue onto the SS372 Telesina, taking the Telese exit. From there, follow local signs for San Salvatore Telesino. For the Parco del Grassano, head to Via Grassano, where parking is available. The Benedictine Abbey is located on Via Molino Pacelli, in the town centre.
Note: The Abbey of San Salvatore is open on Sunday mornings from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm; visits at other times must be booked in advance. Access to the Parco del Grassano is free for walking, but bringing food for picnics is restricted to designated areas and requires payment of a fee.
